RuneScape, occasionally known as RuneScape 3,is a dream massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) developed and published by Jagex, first published in January 2001. RuneScape was originally a browser game constructed with the Java programming language, but was largely replaced with a standalone C++-coded customer in 2016.

RuneScape occurs in the world of Gielinor, a medieval fantasy realm divided into different kingdoms, areas, and cities.Players can travel through Gielinor through a number of methods including on foot, magical charms, or charter ships.Each area provides different types of monsters, sources, and quests to challenge gamers. The game's fictional universe has also been explored through a tie-in video game on another of its manufacturer's websites, FunOrb, Armies of Gielinor,and the novels Betrayal at Falador,Return to Canifis,and Legacy of Blood.


Players are represented at the sport with customisable avatars. RuneScape doesn't follow a linear storyline; rather, players set their own goals and objectives. Players interact with each other via gambling, conversing, or simply by engaging in mini-games and actions, a few of which are competitive or combative in nature, while others require cooperative or collaborative play.

The first public version of RuneScape was released in January 2001 in beta form, with Jagex as its own copyright holder being formed after that year. The next iteration of this game, known as RuneScape 3, has been released in July 2013. Old School RuneScape, a different, older variant of this game dating from August 2007 premiered in February 2013, and is preserved alongside the first client. It was declared that cellular ports of both versions of RuneScape could be released to get Android and iOS apparatus in 2018.

Combat
RuneScape features a semi-real-time combat system. Combat is an important feature of the game, allowing gamers to conquer monsters to get dropped items or to complete quests. A battle level is an indicator of how powerful a player or NPC is in battle. For gamers, it is set by applying a mathematical formula for their combat skills.Players take part in battle by clicking the enemy they want their character to attack and will automatically continue fighting till they kill their competitor, die, or escape from the fight. Most of the game's weapons are either fantastical in nature, and feature various strengths and weaknesses. Players can also summon a familiar to aid with combat,use special attacks known as"skills" to deal extra damage,and use the Prayer ability to enhance their combat prowess.

Combat is divided into three main classes: melee, magic and ranged. Melee attacks are close selection,magical attacks focus on utilizing runestones to throw spells,and ranged attacks use projectile weapons like arrows, darts or throwing knives.These combat forms compose a"Combat Triangle", which modulates effectiveness of styles at a rock-paper-scissors style; melee beats triumphed, ranged beats magical, magic beats melee, and each style is neutral to itself.The benefits and pitfalls of this combat triangle apply to both NPCs and player opponents. Players aren't required to pick a character class nor are they bound to some particular category of battle. They could freely change between or blend the 3 styles of battle by switching weapons and armour.

Combat is governed by a life points program. Each combatant has a maximum capacity of life factors, and expires when their health is depleted to 0. Missing life points can be retrieved by consuming certain food or drinks, or casting skills. Back in June 2012 players were invited to beta-test a brand new battle system named"Evolution of Combat",which included fundamental changes like re-balancing that the Combat Triangle to prevent favouring melee strikes,and replacing special weapon attacks with abilities that create a variety of consequences when activated. The system was released on the live game on 20 November 2012. A variety of polls were added for players to vote on in game that could determine the end result of future content creation,a few of which would dictate the development of the improved combat system.A beta for a separate combat system dubbed"Legacy Mode" was introduced to gamers around 16 June 2014,prior to being introduced into the live match on 14 July. Legacy Mode enables players to switch to the combat system and interface from prior to June 2012 instead of the Evolution of Combat system.


Player versus player combat (PvP) can be performed in specific controlled mini-games and within a place called the Wilderness. The Duel Arena allows players to stake money and items,while other PvP games offer their own rewards. In the Wilderness, players can engage in combat provided that their combat levels fall within a certain range of each other, and if a player kills their opponent they will be able to claim their opponent's items as a reward.

Before December 2007, players moved into the Wilderness to battle other players in a particular battle level array, hoping to kill them and gain their items.In December 2007, the Wilderness was altered to prevent players from transferring in-game items for real-world currency.PvP battle was taken out of the Wilderness and temporarily limited to fresh mini-games named Bounty Hunter and Clan Wars.Bounty Hunter was replaced by special Bounty Worlds on 6 May 2009 in which players were restricted into the Wilderness and may be assigned specific targets to kill.

Non-player interaction
NPCs populate the kingdom of Gielinor. Some NPCs, like shopkeepers and a few characters in quests, are unavailable for combat. But most NPCs may be assaulted and these are generally referred to as monsters. Monsters range from ordinary, non-toxic animals, like cows and goblins, to unique and often much stronger creatures, such as the Queen Black Dragon, Telos, and Vorago.


Most monsters have their particular strengths and flaws, notable exceptions being certain bosses, which have no particular weaknesses. Demons, by way of example, have a weak defence against ranged attacks, whilst metal dragons have very high defence against ranged. Monsters may either be competitive or non-aggressive. Quests are succession of tasks with a narrative that players can decide to finish. These generally have requirements including minimum levels in some specific abilities, combat levels, quest points and/or the conclusion of other quests. Players receive various benefits for completion of quests, including cash, unique items, access to new areas, pursuit points and/or gains in skill expertise. Some quests require players to work together, and many require players to take part in challenging battle. Quests are grouped into categories based on prerequisites and difficulty.Once a participant completes all quests in the game, an achievement item called the"Quest Point Cape" could be claimed.New quests are released periodically.

History and development
Andrew Gower developed RuneScape with the guidance of his brother Paul Gower.It was initially conceived as a text-based MUD, but images were incorporated early in evolution, adding it into the positions of what were then known as"graphic MUDs". The first public version of the game used a mixture of three-dimensional and two-dimensional sprites. It was released as a beta version on 4 January 2001, and initially operated from the parents' house in Nottingham.In December 2001, the Gower brothers, along with Continuous Tedder, shaped Jagex to take over the business aspects of conducting RuneScape.Among its early innovations Jagex developed an interpreted domain-specific scripting language named RuneScript, which can be used by RuneScape's host for event handling.In February 2002, a monthly subscription support was introduced, permitting access to additional features including new areas, quests, and items not readily available to free users.


Ranged fight in RuneScape Classic
Since the match gained more users, Jagex began planning major changes.The developers rewrote the game engine, producing a new version of the game with completely three-dimensional images called RuneScape 2. Upon its official release, RuneScape 2 was renamed simply RuneScape, while the older version of the game was retained on line under the title RuneScape Classic. On 12 January 2006, Jagex prohibited over 5,000 Vintage accounts for cheating. To prevent further cheating, Classic was closed to new accounts and access was restricted to accounts who had played it at least once between 3 August 2005 and 12 January 2006.

To support RuneScape's free content, advertisements appear on a banner above the playing screen on the free-to-play servers.

On 16 May 2006, Jagex upgraded RuneScape's game engine, improving the game's loading times and reducing its memory requirements.On 1 July 2008, Jagex released a beta of their"High Detail" style for associates, that was prolonged to free players fourteen days later.Before the launch, Jagex stated that it would be revealed in the 2008 E3 trade show.

In an interview in May 2008, former Jagex CEO Geoff Iddison stated that,"We do plan to go East with it [RuneScape] into the Asian marketplace and the Eastern European marketplace also" [...]"RuneScape is not for Japan, but it could work well in Malaysia for instance. And where is India in all of this? I think RuneScape is a game that will be embraced in the Indian world and the local-speaking Indian world. We are looking at each of those markets individually."
